Bukit Sari Temple

Bukit Sari temple located in the middle of the monkey forest Sangeh Village, north of Badung. The temple area is one of the attractions that tempt. Imagine, a quiet temple that looks like a castle guarded by hundreds of troops of monkeys.

According to the story, Pura Bukit Sari built by Anak Agung anglurah Made Karang Asem sakti, the adopted son of the King of Mengwi in that time, Cokorda Blambangan sakti. Since young Anak Agung anglurah Made Karang Asem likes to live a spiritual behavior. One night, while undergoing austerities, he gained pawisik (inspiration) to set up a temple in the middle of the monkey forest at sangeh.

Sangeh nutmeg tree, there is also an interesting story. According to myth, the trees came from the area of Mount Agung in eastern Bali. A gang of nutmeg trees travel from Bali's Mount Agung to the western region. Unfortunately, at the night road trip can be seen by someone. As a result, the magical journey stalled. The trees are then settled there and developed into the forest of Sangeh until today.

Old story said, Sangeh derived from two words: Sang the meaning of people and ngeh means see or be interpreted as being seen.

Nowadays, the forest of sangeh inhabited by hundreds of gray monkeys and long-tailed. The current population is approximately 700 individuals. Herd of monkeys was divided into three groups: the western, central, and eastern. Each group is led by a male monkey king.

The monkeys in this region is quite benign. They rarely get groceries by way of seizing visitors. However, do not try to make the monkey angry. Moreover, the angry is the king. Kehen Temple is a beautiful Hindu temple located in foothills, south part of Bangli Regency and it is about 45 Km from Denpasar town. Watukaru or Batukaru Temple

Watukaru temple or Pura Batukaru is one of the biggest Hindu Temples in Bali (Sad Kahyangan) with Catur Lokapala Temple and Padmabhuwana Temple status. Location

Ulun Danu Beratan Temple

Uluwatu Temple is a Hindu temple set on the cliff bank in south part of Bali Peninsula. It is one of Sad Kahyangan Temple in Bali (six big groups of Bali Temples), located in Pecatu Village, Sub district of South Kuta, and Badung Regency or about 25 Km southerly part of Denpasar town. It is situated on the coral reef sordid to sea about 80 meters above the sea level. It is featured by a small dry forest which is mostly called by Alas Kekeran (interdict forest) which is belong to the temple and dwelt by a lot of monkeys and other animal. Name of Uluwatu was come from the word Ulu meaning the head and Watu meaning stone. Therefore Uluwatu Temple mean the temple built in tip of coral reef.

Uluwatu Temple in Story
In the right and left of temple building or Pelinggih Ida Bagus Ratu Jurit located in complex of Uluwatu Temple, there are two stone mangers that look like a boat. When both of it are united, hence it's look similar to sarcophagus, the famous stone from megalithic era culture. There is archaeology omission coming from 16 centuries in firm of arch or winged entrance gate. Winged entrance gate is one of the scarce archaeology omissions.   • The first visit when he conducts the Tirtha Yatra (the journey to visit the holy places). His heart had jolted and heard a soul whisper that place good for worshiping God when arrive in Uluwatu. On that time, he chose this place as a place for Ngeluwur (re of soul /dead leave without body to return to the origin/moksa). Pursuant to the consideration then he set mind to build the Parhayangan or extend the building of Uluwatu Temple which there have previously. When Mpu Kuturan extend the building of Uluwatu Temple, he build hostel as residence and then the ex- the hostel building is used by the local people as a shrine named the Gong Hill Temple (Pura Bukit Gong). The building of Parhyangan in Uluwatu Temple is done by Mpu Kuturan in the early 16 century after he lifted to become the Purohita (priest of king adviser) from king of Dalem Waturenggong commander in the year 1460-1552 .
  • Mpu Kuturan on his second visit has reached the nature Moksa. OnTuesday of Kliwon Medangsya (Balinese Calendar), it was witnessed by a fisherman, his name Ki Pasek Nambangan, he looked the flash with very bright light step into the space called Ngeluwur.

Sakenan Temple

Sakenan Temple is a Hindu Temple located in the northwest of Serangan Village, Sub district of Denpasar and Badung regency. It is about 10 KM south part of Denpasar Town. We see a coastal view with beautiful sea, hill consecution and Nusa Dua Beach which are located in south side. The structure of Sakenan Temple is divided into 2 groups those are Sakenan Temple is a temple complex which is located in eastside and Dalem Sakenan Temple is a temple complex located in west side.


Sakenan Temple History
According to the papyrus of Dwijendra Tattwa, the name of Sakenan is coming from the word of Sakya means to earn direct unite the mind. This papyrus elaborates that Danghyang Nirartha got stuck and feeling natural beauty of calm sea with the nature of its coast. Therefore he lodge there and do the yoga to worship to the God as supremacy of the safety and prosperity. At the time of doing yoga, he directly earn unite his mind Sakya. Therefore he builds the altar called Sakenan Temple. At the moment Sakenan Temple which is built by the Danghyang Nirartha and recognized by the name of Dalem Sakenan Temple, a complex of Sakenan Temple in west shares.

Temple Ceremony

The Sakenan Temple Festival executed every 6 month (210 days) that is on Saturday of Kliwon Wuku Kuningan (Balinese Calendar) and the same time with the celebration of big holiday for Balinese Hindu which is called Hari Raya Kuningan. The celebration of temple ceremony is conducted during 3 days and the top ceremony procession is called Ceremony of Mapag Sakenan which is executed on second day (Sunday of Umanis Langkir). The celebration of Temple Ceremony is accompanied by the Wali Dance (Secret Dance) like Barong Ket and Barong Landung Dance. Ponjok Batu Temple

Ponjok Batu Temple is a stone temple where all temple buildings are made from stone. It is located Banjar Alasari, Pacung countryside, Tejakula sub district and Singaraja regency about 24 km eastside of Singaraja town or north part of Bali. This temple area own the wide area about 35 acre in form of black stones bank. The position of this temple is rather sticking out to the sea as a foreland or Ponjok. Base on the position and condition then this place is named by Ponjok Batu so that the temple is standing above foreland petrify and it is referred as Ponjok Batu Temple.

Ponjok Batu Temple in history
In papyrus of Dwijendra Tattwa elaborate that Danghyang Nirartha (who one spread out the Hinduism in Bali) besides executing Tirtha Yatra (visit the holy places) in Bali area, he also do at Lombok and Sumbawa Island . When he does the tirta yatra in Lombok and Sumbawa Island , he leave in Bali passing the north area of Bali and then it is named by Denbukit. Hereinafter narrated that Danghyang Nirartha found the lodging that is located in coastal periphery with its stone bank and steep rather sordid to sea in the form of a foreland which is called Ponjok. After omitting a few moments in the lodging then he go to Lombok and Sumbawa Island to conduct the Tirtha Yatra. At the end, the Pesraman/lodging of Danghyang Nirartha is built an altar named with Ponjok Batu Temple which has been existing since 16 century. It is founded together with the execution of Danghyang Nirartha journey in north part of Bali .

Function of Ponjok Batu Temple as follows:
  • According to the archaeology omission at Ponjok Batu Temple , there is an Arca (statue) with four hands as a fundamental of Ponjok Batu Temple building. The attribute (icon) of this Arca have timeworn, so that any kind of object brought is ignorable and the God Arca it self can not be identified. Besides of the God Statue (Arca), in Ponjok Batu Temple is also found a Lembu Nandi Arca (a cow statue) is meaning from Siwa God. If the both Arcas are interacting hence the God Arca with 4 hands in this temple is Arca of Siwa God.
  • According to Papyrus of Dwijendra Tattwa, the history elaboration can be said that the function of Ponjok Batu Temple is for worship the supremacy of Danghyang Nirartha as a Teacher in settling Hinduism teaching, especially Siwaism. The function strengthened with the existence of special temple building in Ponjok Batu Temple is called Danghyang Nirartha Temple.

Pulaki Temple

Pulaki Temple or Pura Pulaki is a Hindu shrine located in the hill bank and in front of the beautiful beach in north part of Bali. It is one of the biggest Hindu temples in Bali situated in the coastal side west part of Singaraja town or 1 hour drive to the west from the town. This temple is set on the flat land with stone hill bank as a back drop meanwhile the blue ocean is just in front of the temple.

What to See in Pulaki Temple?
Pulaki Temple is a famous temple among the Hindu people in Bali located in Singaraja regency, north part of Bali. There are the group of monkeys dwell the hill forest around the temple and it usually standing around the temple in the day time. The beautiful beach with black sand and calm seawater is one of the fascinations to visitor to come to this temple. We can find the beautiful hill bank and beaches along the coastal road.

Location
It is located in Banyuoah Village, Gerokgak Sub District, Singaraja Regency, north part of Bali. It is just 3 hours drive from Bali's International Airport or 1 hour drive from Singaraja town. Gua Lawah/Bat Cave

Gua Lawah or Bat Cave is one of favorite places of interest in Bali and it is located near of hilly bank so it is called reef of Middle hill. This cave is located in Pasinggahan countryside, Dawan sub district, Klungkung Regency, east part of Bali and about 1,5 hours from Denpasar Town. There is a nature cave dwelt by thousands of tail bat located at north side from Jeroan/center of Gua Lawah Temple . Meanwhile the main road from Klungkung to Amlapura is just in front of the temple. Gua Lawah, a shrine for Balinese Hindu
Pursuant to the papyrus of Dwi Jendra Tattwa, the Gua Lawah's name is Gua Lelawah, the name which is given by Danghyang Nirartha (a priest overspread the Hindu teaching in Bali) when he stop in this place on his Tirtha Yatra trips. He arrive at a cave which is a lot of bats hang on and its unbroken voice clamor as hymn to add the beauty of the cave. Therefore this cave is named by Gua Lawah/Bat Cave. On the above cave is growth by the flower trees with it's smelt fragrance and stimulus the peace mind of Danghyang Nirartha, so that he overnight stay for some nights in this place. From the cave we see also the beautiful coast with the blue ocean with Nusa Penida Island as a backdrop.

Gua Lawah Temple History
  • According to the chronicle of Bendesa Mas, it mentions that the elaborations of Mpu Kuturan (a Hindu priest who come from Java) then he live in Bali which has been hosted in Silayukti, Padang Bai. He also builds some temple like Gua Lawah Temple
  • According to the Papyrus of Dwijendra Tattwa, it narrates that after Danghyang Nirartha stay some nights at Goa Lawah, then he build a Kahyangan Temple on the ground. It means that Danghyang Nirartha extends the Palinggih or temple building existing at Gua Lawah Temple .
Function of Goa Lawah Temple :
  • Based on Papyrus of Kusuma Dewa, it is Giha Lawah, a palace from Basuki god
  • Based on Papyrus of Padma Bhuwana is explaining that in accordance to holy letter title Pentameter Aksara
  • The structure of Gua Lawah Temple building is based on the temple building from Ista Dewata in particular of Padmasana which is located in front of Siwa Cave as power of entire universe potency
  • Based on Lontar Babad Dalem is implying that Gua Lawah Temple as a good place to execute the Tirtha Yatra or Nyegara Gunung (meditation), because in this place there are nature potency of solidarity that is mount, the sea, goad an watu or petrify

Location
Rambut Siwi Temple is one of big temple in  Bali located in Yeh Embang Kangin countryside, Mendoyo district and Jembrana regency. It is about 2.5 hours drives from Denpasar town go to the west part of Bali or 45 minutes drive from Negara town. This temple is daily taken care by a group of community which is called ‘Pangempon' come from Pekutatan district. It is simple way to reach this temple from Denpasar and just follow the main road to Gilimanuk. On the way to Gilimanuk, in particular of entering the regency of Jembrana area, you will find out a temple in the left side where most of the cars stop. Rambut Siwi Temple is visited by many tourists and it is one of the tourist destinations in Bali or Places of Interest in Bali .

Purancak Temple

Purancak Temple is also mentioning as Pura Perancak situated in the coastal area right at Purancak Countryside, Negara sub district and Jembrana Regency. In order to reach the location of this temple which is also situated in the estuary of Purancak River, we have to go the west direction and goes to through the good road with the car or other motorcycle. After going through the journey within 9 Km from the district town, all visitors who visit this temple will arrive at non-irrigated dry field. This land is fully planted by the coconut trees with beautiful panorama that make a comfortable atmosphere.
Story
Pertaining to the name (Abhiseka) of Purancak Temple, it is inseparable from the holy journey (Dharmayatra and Tirthayatra) of Danghyang Dwijendra, a famous Siwa Religion Adviser. From the domestic sources, there is opinion that the name of Purancak Temple is come the word of Perahu Encak (Balinese Language meaning leaky boat or breaking boat). There is also from domestic source say that the this temple's name is come from word Ancak (The tree name, sycamore bodi), because when Danghyang Dwijendra crossing the sea in west part of Bali Island that is also recognized as Sagara Rupek, he firstly arrive at the location where the Purancak Temple existing now. He wait his wife and son who go up the leaky boat that had been patched by spool gourd leaf ( Waluh Pahit), while Danghyang Dwijendra go up a bitter fruit Waluh (spool gourd) by using his both hand and feet as oar .

When he waiting his wife and son, he was seat under a tree which is called Ancak Tree and at the same time he do conversation with a cow farmer. Since he was seat under that tree then The Temple is built right in this location hence this temple is named by Purancak Temple. But in conjunction to other domestic sources that is estimated the Purancak Temple is also taken away from the name of this countryside where he firstly arrive and do pray while waiting his family.

This temple is kept by a priest every day who waiting and monitoring everyone who cross the way. The priest will remind and admonishing if there anyone who pass and neglect to conduct the pray based on the regulation stated by I Ngurah Ragsasa, the powerful and handle hegemony over there .

Dhangyang Dwijendra and his family continue his holy journey and pass this temple. When he arrive at this temple area, the priest as a temple keeper who is also observe everyone crossing this area, he admonished and asked to Danghyang Dwinjendra to do pray in this temple. When he reach in the silent moment of praying, suddenly inscrutable fact happened that this temple breaks. When witnessing this inscrutable occurrence, I Ngurah Rangsasa with all his supporter are feeling very fear and then run to his house meanwhile the temple priest is very braze and request to Danghyang Dwijendra return the temple back to the perfection like previously.

Dhangyang Dwijendra finally fulfills his request and then he do pray again to return the temple condition like previously. By blessing of his spiritual strengthens and Chastity, the temple become intact return. The priest look so happy to witness all this experiences then Danghyang Dwijendra bestow the Kalpika to the priest in order to glorify as a proof that he was done a holy journey to this place.

Besakih Temple

Besakih Temple is the biggest Hindu temple in Bali which the local people call Pura Besakih. It owns beautiful view from the top of temple area where we can see the wide nature panorama until to the ocean so that way this temple is many visited by tourists from all over the world. Besakih Temple is located in Besakih countryside, Rendang sub district, Karangasem regency, east part of the island. It is located in southwest side bevel of mount Agung, the biggest mounts in Bali. Besakih in Mythology
The Besakih's name is come from the word of Basuki, the old language from Sanskrit Wasuki, and then it become the Ancient Java Language. In this Sanskrit, the Basuki means congratulation. In mythology of Samudramanthana has mentioned that Basuki is a dragon that twines the Mount Mandara. The omission has come from tradition megalithic which had been indicated that it had to be sanctified place. It seems, the Besakih is coming from very old era which is far before the existence of Hinduism influence. Hereinafter, an Ancient Bali king of Sri Kesari Warmadewa found the Merajan Selonding Temple in this temple complex area. He also commands to build the Blanjong Monument that is located in Sanur Village. The Besakih Temple complex is built pursuant to cosmos balance.
